Dear Los Alamitos Unified School District Families,

I want to update you on some important elements of our plan for maintaining continuity while schools are closed during the coronavirus emergency.

Online Instruction

On Wednesday we are launching our Learning Connection, an online learning portal for ongoing daily instruction and support for our students. Students can use any personal desktop, laptop or tablet computer with a Chrome browser and internet access for online instruction. Tomorrow, we will follow up with a message containing an active link for Learning Connection and specific instructions for getting started in online school Wednesday morning.

Internet and Tech Support

Many of your students already have access to a home computer or Chromebook, but for those who do not, we have set up a checkout program beginning tomorrow, March 17, at each school. Go to your school’s main office from 1:00 -3:30 PM and fill out a Device Home Use Checkout Agreement in order to receive a Chromebook and charging cable during the school closure period. Students will log into these devices as they normally do in their classrooms with their GoLosAl username and password.

If you don’t have internet access at home, local cable provider Spectrum is offering 60 days of free internet service. To obtain the service, please call 844-488-8395 and, at the prompt, choose “New Service” to get details and arrange installation. If the Spectrum option does not work out for you, please contact your school principal for further assistance with home internet access options.

Textbooks and Personal Belongings

Schools also will be open during the Tuesday device pickup window for you to pick up any supplies, textbooks or personal belongings that your student might need at home during the school closure period. If you unable to get to your school during the Tuesday pick-up window, please contact your school office as soon as possible and make alternative arrangements.

Free Lunch Service

We also wanted to let you know that starting Wednesday we are providing families the opportunity to pick up free lunches at four of our school sites for children ages 2-18. No registration is required, but each child receiving a meal must be present.

Meals will be available at these sites weekdays, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, from March 18 – 27:

Los Alamitos Elementary10862 Bloomfield St., Los Alamitos, CA 90720 (parking lot)
Weaver Elementary11872 Wembley Rd., Los Alamitos, CA 90720 (parking lot)
McGaugh Elementary1698 Bolsa Ave., Seal Beach, CA 90720 (side parking lot – next to tennis courts)
Los Alamitos High School3591 W. Cerritos Ave., Los Alamitos, CA 90720 (back lot)

Meals — which include an entrée, fruit, vegetable, and milk — are served on a first come, first served basis. During inclement weather, they can be picked up at the school cafeterias. Meals will be distributed in the parking lot at each site but cannot be consumed on-site.

As always, our Food Services Department is taking all necessary precautions to ensure our facilities and staff exceed health code regulations to provide a healthy and safe experience. Please contact the department at (562)799-4592 x81118 if you have any questions.

The current emergency continues to present for us all a wide variety of challenges, but I remain confident that together we can not only surmount them but emerge from this crisis stronger as a community. I will continue to keep you updated in a timely way as we move forward.

Kind regards,

Andrew Pulver, Ed.D
